Widen the tax net to reduce the burden on taxpayers & spend less-Gov’t told
Chartered economist Emmanuel Amoah-Darkwah has advised the government to focus on ways in expanding the tax net to capture more taxpayers.
He explained that Ghanaians were already overburdened with taxes hence we must refocus our direction in widening the tax net than overburden the few taxpayers with new taxes.
He said it is not advisable to introduce new taxes without expanding the net to cover several others.
The economist speaking ahead of the budget presentation asserted that our ability to collect taxes is central to every government since it allows leaders to finance social services such as health, education, and critical infrastructure such as electricity and roads, and other public goods.
He urged the government to introduce comprehensive tax administration reforms, adding we would need successful revenue mobilization methods.
Compliance, he lamented, was also a major challenge in the tax regime as mining companies are not filing the appropriate tax returns.
In his view, tax collection has an impact on the economy, particularly the corporations, small businesses, traders and consumers hence if taxes, are levied on only a few citizens, it will create serious challenges.
