Western Togoland Group are criminals, we cannot negotiate with them-Veep

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has shot down suggestions for the government to engage members of the Homeland Study Group, who have called for their independence.

Responding to a question on whether the government was ready to negotiate with members of the group, he said there would be no basis for the government to negotiate with because there are criminals and must be dealt with.

Colonel Festus Aboagye (rtd) in the wake of another reported attack at the State Transport Corporation (STC) in Ho in the Volta Region called on the government to reach out to the leaders of the secessionists’ group in negotiation and mediation to find out the legitimacy of their struggle.

According to the Security Analyst, engaging the leaders of the secessionists in a dialogue at this point in the situation is critical in preventing possible heightening of catastrophic acts in the Volta Region and other places in the country.

But reacting to this and other suggestions from other security experts, the Vice President said what these group of persons are calling for does not exist and it is the figment of their own imagination.

Speaking to Asempa Fm’s Ekosiisen, he said there is no need to engage them because it will open the floodgate for other groups top spring up and make frivolous demands.

When asked if negotiations will not happen he responded ”with who? These criminals? It doesn’t make sense, adding, we will try to deal with it.

He insisted there is no legal basis top negotiate with them because they have no legal basis and has admonished Ghanaians to help fight this because it is not a political party issue.

”It is criminal, and so Ghana must come together; we have one country. This is not a political party matter,” he declared.
