We want to be paid just like MPs, the motorbikes you give us is nothing- Assembly members

A group calling itself concerned Assembly Members in the Ashanti Region has expressed their disappointment in the government for neglecting them and only focusing on Members of Parliament.

According to them, governments over the years have not seen the impact of assembly members and their contributions towards the development of the country hence treating them unfairly.

The aggrieved assembly members argued that what they do is not different from what MPs do.

They said assembly members and members of parliament do the same work and have equal responsibilities but assembly members have been sidelined.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Andrew Owusu , the assembly member of Sasa Bomso Electoral Area in Afigya Kwabre South District said the time has come for assembly members to be paid for their services.

In an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he said they could no longer bear the neglect and disrespect despite the work they do.

According to him, the tea where they were only given motorbikes and other items is over and it was time for us to enjoy the fruits of our labour.

He also posited that the assembly members are the first point of call when residents in the various assemblies are faced with challenges.

“We are not paid but when there are issues in the assemblies, residents call on the assembly members first before they go to any other person.”
