A resident and missionary teacher in the Ada West District Zebediah Kwao, has taken a swipe at political leaders for paying lip service to the issues of tidal waves in the Ada community.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he said over the years political leaders, including National Disaster Management officials, MPs, MCEs come around to give them assurances, but nothing has been done.
He said several assurances to give them a sea defence wall have not materialised.
He said that although former President John Dramani Mahama made attempts to construct a sea defence wall in Ada, it ended in Ada East, and Ada West did not benefit from it.
“Over the years, we have the MCE, MPs, and NADMO coordinators come around promising to give us sea defence. Actually, under Mahama, a sea defence started but it didn’t get to our end. It ended at Totobi in the Ada East District. So they continue to tell us they are there to help us only to come and give us 25kg of rice, mackerel, one gallon of oil, maize, a blanket, and a mattress. If you should give me a blanket and mattress, and my rooms are flooded and I have nowhere to sleep, where would I put the blanket? That is the only thing they do. Because they know the waves will subdue, they just give us such assurances and does nothing about the problem”.
Several homes with dozens of residents have been rendered homeless following tidal waves that have hit the area, especially Aklabanya in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region.
Affected residents say the tidal waves of the sea keep increasing by the day and the sea waves keep spreading itself into homes along the coast.
Mr. Kwao reported that the residents who are predominantly fisherfolks had their equipment and money for their businesses washed away by the tidal waves.
Children are unable to attend school due to the situation in the area, he said.
The affected homes are some kilometres away from the sea but the sea has not been able to enter their homes due to the high tidal waves, he added.
He said several buildings have been destroyed and properties worth millions of Ghana cedis destroyed.
He noted that some persons who were formerly staying closer to the sea have relocated as part of measures to prevent the waves from destroying their properties.
