Limann held soldiers hostage & wanted to kill them secretly-Fmr bodyguard of Rawlings,
A former bodyguard of late President Jerry John Rawlings, ex-sergeant Muugu Frimpong has disclosed that the late Hilla Limann was overthrown because he violated the rights and abused people including soldiers.
Speaking exclusively on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he alleged that the late Limann held soldiers, hostage, without fair trial and was abusing them on the quiet.
He further disclosed that lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata was the one who revealed the secrets of Liman of keeping people in the condemned cells.
He said 12 soldiers were kept at the condemned cells and waiting to be killed at the blind side of Ghanaians.
Mr. Muugu went on to state that without the support of Rawlings, he and the other soldiers would have been murdered secretly at the orders of Liman.
The overthrow of Hilla Limann’s government in 1981, he noted was justified.
He cited the failure on the part of the People’s National Party (PNP) to safeguard the gains of the June 4th Uprising.
Flt. Lt. J.J Rawlings, before becoming the first President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana in 1992, led two coup d’etats – first in 1979 and second in 1981, 31 December, to overthrow the regimes of General F. K. Akuffo of the Supreme Military Council II and President Hilla Limann of People’s National Party, respectively.
These military interventions his former guard noted were to sanitize the country, ensure probity, accountability, and transparency.
He said the rank and file of the military then supported Rawlings because he was concerned about the welfare of the soldiers.
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that Rawlings was unfairly accused of many crimes including the gruesome murder of three High Court judges and a reverend minister.
