Gender Minister reacts to jail term handed man who chopped off son’s ear
Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Madam Cynthia Mamle Morrison on Frontline with Kwabena Agyapong spoke about the case of a father (55 year old Osmanu Mumuni of Weija in Accra) who chopped off his son’s ear and attempted burning his fingers too.
Many have verbally lashed the father’s reactions and also questioned the two-year jail term smashed at him by the court.
The judgment did not go down well with the majority in the public domain.
But the minister, Hon. Morrison has asked the public to also respect the law and court judgements.
“Yes, the father’s reaction was barbaric but the court has the best interpretation. As a dad, I know he would not forgive himself in future”, she told.
The minister who is also Member of Parliament for Agona West urged parents to find better ways of correcting their wards necessary and also advised children to desist such criminal acts no matter the circumstances.
Osmanu Mumuni who chopped off his 10-year-old son’s ear for allegedly stealing his GH¢250 was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment.
The case which was recently presided over by Judge H/H Bernard Bentil convicted the accused person after pleading guilty to both counts.
Osmanu Mumuni was arrested on May 17, 2020 by the Weija Divisional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) for cutting off part of his son’s ear with a blade after the victim’s mother reported the case to the police.
The victim had been living with his father at Obuom-Domeabra, near Weija, since his parents divorced.
His son was taken to the Amanfrom Polyclinic near Weija to receive medical attention.
