Court issues bench warrant for the arrest of Jomoro MP

A Sekondi High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Jomoro MP, Dorcas Afffo Toffey.

The court presided over by Sedina Agbemavaissued the warrant following the absence of the MP from the hearing on Monday, December 6, 2021.

For her failure to appear before the Registrar of the court to produce documents showing proof that she had renounced her Ivorian citizenship as ordered by a Sekondi High Court, a contempt case was filed against her by one Joshua Emuah Kofie from Nuba-Mpataba in the constituency.

She has been sued for allegedly possessing dual citizenship prior to the 2020 election.

On June 22, 2021, the court ruled that the MP for Jomoro must produce evidence of her renounced dual citizenship.

The court gave the order to the MP to produce the document within 10 days as proof of renouncing her Ivorian citizenship.

The applicant Joshua Emuah Kofie had argued that the MP was not qualified to contest as the people’s representative in the country’s legislative assembly.

He alleged that the MP was holding multiple nationalities –American and Ivorian citizenships, which violates the 1992 Constitution.

However, the MP denied having American citizenship but had Ivorian citizenship which she said she had renounced.
