50 shops closed in Volta Region for flouting COVID-19 protocols

The Environmental Health Department in the Volta region has closed some shops and businesses that ignored the COVID-19 pandemic protocols.

A task force, drawn from the department and the Ho Municipal Assembly, with support from the security agencies, served notice of closure to about 50 shops and business outlets, days ago.

The businesses either refused to install hand-washing stations, had no marking to guide social distancing, or had attendants not wearing face masks.

Some food vendors, who also flouted the rules despite earlier sensitisation, had their items confiscated .

Mrs Sybil Boison Regional Environmental Health Officer, told Rainbow radio reporter Nana Kwasi, that, the outlet would remain under lock while operations sanctioned and guided on observing the protocols.

She cautioned businesses against sharing hand washing facilities.

Shop owners were also instructed on maintaining the facilities and encourageD to always keep their faces masks on, especially when engaging with Customers.

Meanwhile, major retail outlets including Melcom and Stadium Gate Shopping center maintained strict hand washing protocols and also ensured that all visitors wore face masks.
