27 E-Blocks contract terminated-Ministry

The Ministry of Education has announced the termination of the construction of some 27 Community Day Senior High Schools known as E-blocks across the country.

According to the Ministry, “for 21 of them, we are very hopeful that they will be completed and operationalized soon. 16 of them are between 25% and 60% complete.”

Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM on Wednesday, Head of Communication at the Education Ministry, Kwasi Kwarteng indicated that the state of some of the structures gave them no other alternative than to terminate the contract as many were “at sub-structural levels.”

“You award it to the contractor, and you don’t provide funding and the contractor can come to the site once and does not appear on site months later.

“The contracts have been terminated outrightly. For some of them, after 2 or 3 years, you see that the contract is still at 1% completion stage,” he said.

The Minority is demanding accountability from the government in respect of some abandoned E-block projects started by the John Mahama administration.

Wrapping up a two-day tour of the Greater Accra, Volta and Eastern regions to ascertain the progress of work of the various E-blocks, the minority members of the Education Committee expressed disappointment that the government has not shown commitment toward completing the projects.

The team toured facilities at Sege in the Greater Accra region; Aflao and Ziope in the Volta region, as well as Oborpah, Sekesuah and Apersuah in the Lower Manya Krobo and Yilo Krobo constituencies of the Eastern region, respectively.
