Founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akaploo, has identified importation as one of the major problems crippling Ghana’s economy.
He says our over-dependence on imports with less production for local consumption and export has contributed to creating problems for the local economy.
This situation, he noted, generates less revenue for the country after our balance trade and balance of payments.
He also touched on Ghana’s taste for borrowing, adding that we have borrowed excessively, which every government is guilty of.
Mr. Akpaloo was speaking to Kwabena Agyapong, host of Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm.
In his view, a bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will not solve our economic challenges, rather we have to adopt homegrown measures.
He is proposing a ban on the export of chicken, which will improve the local poultry industry since it has potential expansion and job creation.
”We have to invest in industry poultry activities. The Planting for Food and Jobs and the Rearing for Food and exports by this government is a joke. We have to be serious in this country.”
”What is stopping the government from investing in large-scale rice farming? Ghanaians consume rice a lot, but the majority of rice brands are imported. We have to stop it and develop our local rice industry,” he posited.
