The Member of Parliament for Builsa South Dr. Clement Apaak, has questioned the rationale behind the decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to make the Ghana card the sole identification for the compilation of a new voters’ register.
Dr. Apaak is claiming that such a move will only provide an avenue for the electoral body and the ruling government to rig the polls.
The Minority has hinted at plans to oppose the decision by the EC ro compile a new register using the Ghana Card as the sole identification card for the registration.
The Minority says it will not support the request by the EC to compile a new register based on the new Ghana card.
Leader, Haruna Iddrisu addressing the press on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, stated that the basis is a wasteful expenditure and will disenfranchise a lot of Ghanaians who have not registered or were yet to secure their Ghana cards.
“Our understanding as we pick it up is that the EC is desperately planning to discard the 2020 voters register and replace it with a new voter register, which will cause taxpayers and the people of Ghana 80 million dollars thereabout.”
Dr. Apaak reacting to the same issue, wondered why the EC would limit the mode of identification for the new register to the Ghana card.
He insisted the move would not only disenfranchise potential voters but serve as an avenue for rigging.
“The Jean Mensa-led EC has the audacity to bring to Parliament a Constitutional Instrument (C.I) that seeks to make the Ghana card the ONLY ID acceptable to qualify citizens to register to vote in 2024? Is this phase 1 of the rigging scheme to break the 8? We must resist! #Arise!
