Gov’t must expand the economy to encourage lawyers to work in other regions aside from Accra, Takoradi, Kumasi- GBA

A private legal practitioner who doubles as the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Saviour Kudze has called for an expansion of the economy across the various regions of Ghana to encourage lawyers to consider working in other regions.

Answering a question on what the GBA could do to encourage lawyers to consider working in other regions aside from Accra, he said there was nothing much they could do because it is a personal and economic decision.

He said no lawyer would want to work in an area that is not economically viable.

He argued that we do not have to concentrate on industry and trade only in Accra, Kumasi or Takoradi.

He wants the government to consider expanding the economy so it will create opportunities for other regions.

He said economic opportunities which do not exist in some areas discourage lawyers from working in such areas.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm with sit-in host Rashid Obodai Provencal, he said lawyers a lot of money in training themselves and cannot afford to work in areas that lack economic viability.

When asked if the government should introduce a scholarship scheme for the law school he said ”it is a good call, but it would be difficult to achieve that. Many lawyers are private practitioners, so, why should the government pay for your education. It has never happened, and it will happen”.

He further disagreed with the assertion that the study of law is for the elite adding, ”it is the economy that has made it so. Let us all pay attention to the economy”.
