The current leading professional golfer in the West African sub region Vincent Torgah has won the maiden edition of Samartex Mahogany open golf championship held at the Samartex golf club, in the Western Region of Ghana.
The four day championship which is the first of the series on ROAD TO OBOTAN teed off on Thursday 3rd to Sunday 6th March 2022, and attracted over hundred golfers both pros and amateurs across the country.
From the center of the world and resident pro at Samartex golf club Vincent Torgah, who did everything on the course over four days accept hole in one recorded a magnificent score of twenty- two under ( -22) to win of the enviable and converted glittering cup and cash prize of fifteen thousand Ghana cedis (GHs 15000.00).
His main competitors were Ghana’s evergreen golfer Emos Korblah of Achimota Golf Club and fast growing Maxwell Owusu Bonsu of the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi.
Owusu Bonsu who led the leader board on day one and two going into the third day with three and five clear strokes ahead of the two was overpowered by the mental thoughness of Torgah who played levels, birdies, eagles and even score buggies on some the holes in the penultimate and final day to beat Bonsu by four shots at the end.
The only Ghanaian and West African golfer who hold the record to have played in British Seniors Open in United Kingdom, Emos Korblah who was five shots behind Bonsu also exhibited skill, experience and strength to overcome the young man by two stroke which brought his total score to -20, although he was complaining of shoulder injury he has been battling with lately.
The young man Maxwell Owusu Bonsu, the former Ghana team member that represented in the African and World amateurs golf championship in Zimbabwe and Japan respectively, affectionately called Nana Bonsu, from Kumasi golf club, displayed some good golf in the tournament, especially on day one and two which many thoughts he was going to win the flagship category but finished -18 over four days.
This is the second time Vincent Torgah started slow but came back in a more resilient way in final day to emerge winner. He did same in 2014 at the Damang course during the maiden Gold Fields PGA championship, where Nigeria Sunday Odegah led the board from day one to three but Torgah stepped into the plate with championship winning performance at the last day to grab it.
Speaking to journalists after trophy and cash was presented to him, Torgah said he did not intend talking about any plan concerning trips to play outside Ghana yet but rather want to focus on the ROAD TO OBOTAN and make record and also train young golfers in Samreboi and it’s environment to help raise more young Torgah’s in the country.
