140,000 people living with HIV without knowing-AIDS Commission
The Ghana Aids Commission says 140,000 persons are living with the HIV unknowingly.
Director-General for the Ghana Aids Commission Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene who made this known further disclosed that 20,000 new infections are recorded yearly.
He was speaking to Rainbow Radio’s parliamentary correspondent Kuntu Blankson after he had appeared before the Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday.
According to him, the disease continues to ravage the country’s population in spite of the existence of treatment.
Averagely over 20,000 new infections are recorded yearly in the country with 1 out of 5 of such cases being the youth between the ages of 15 and 24, he said.
Dr. Atuahene wants the public to transfer the level of seriousness and resource devotion to the Covid-19 fight to HIV too to avert a national calamity.
He said the world expects Ghana to have the capacity to finance its health programmes including HIV having attained a middle-income status.
Funding cuts he indicated is happening quite rapidly hence the Commission will launch the National HIV/AIDS Fund that has been created to bring about sustainable domestic financing of the AIDS response.
He appealed to Ghanaians to donate into the fund because they have to take care of the people with the infection and contain the spread amongst adolescents.
The rate of infection in the young people especially women he lamented dis terrible hence the need for Ghanaians to support the fund so they will target this group.
The Commission he said is limited in funding and has encouraged Ghanaians to also demonstrate their commitment in fighting HIV as well.
The nation he opined will eliminate the virus in the shortest possible time if Ghanaians show enough commitment to fight it.
