Towards victory 2020: Days of illiterate party agents are gone-Mahama
The 2020 flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has challenged the party to put in place a robust system to help them collate the 2020 election results.
The former president says the 2020 polls would determine the fortunes and future of the NDC as well as the future of the country.
According to him, the party need to put in place system that could guarantee that the party is able to collect its results in able time.
Mr. Mahama was speaking in Tamale Saturday, July 27, to open a three-day retreat to educate and empower Directors of Elections of the opposition party.
The retreat was under the theme: “Repositioning the Election Directorate Strategically for the 2020 Elections”.
The retreat will expose the participants to scientific knowledge and approach on elections management to prepare them towards the 2020 elections.
Mr. Mahama underscored the need for the party to select party agents who are skilled and with the needed competencies and capacity to supervise the polls.
He said the days of illiterate party agents were gone and party agents would not be selected based on how long one has been in the party or the position one holds in the executive.
According to him, “elections are not a lottery where you can win or not win, you must cover every ground to ensure that victory is yours”.
Mr Mahama appealed to the Electoral Commission to address the issues raised by the NDC such as the gazetting of the full presidential results of the 2016 elections especially the polling station results and the need to improve the EC’s information and technology system to avoid compromising the election results transmission system during the 2020 elections.
On his part, the Director of Elections, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah said the 2020 elections is a rescue mission because the NDC would have to rescue Ghanaians from the hands of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The signs of victory 2020 he said are clear that the NDC is coming back in 2020. However, for that to happen, The people of Ghana will go and vote for us. But if we are not able to protect the ballot then work done is zero. So in 2016, we did not lock our door properly…2020 we will lock our door properly…and we shall ensure that we are not cheated again.”
