He
arrived into this world as Leslie Gerald Okyne on the
24th of December a
whole leap of years ago in Geneva in Switzerland! The
youngest and tiniest
of his 3 brothers, he went to Christ the King
International School, Achimota
Secondary School and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science
and Technology in
Ghana, and the University of Westminster in London.
Welcome the "chief inspector, your
inspirer's inspirer, the weekend warmer,
the party rocker -the Prhyme Minister a.k.a. the PM",
one of the hottest DJs
on London's first licensed African radio station,
Rainbow Radio. If music
was the food of life, he would be a very fat person
considering how much
music he consumes a day! He is not sure if he is still a
music artist but he
is one half of the hiplife group called KgPM. They
released their debut
album in 2001 called 'Saa Na Wotie', which had some
songs featuring the
likes of Ghanaian artistes like Obrafour, KK Fosu, Dogo
and Praye.
The
album, produced by Hammer of The Last Two, which was on
Lowdown Records, was
critically acclaimed but lacked the promotion it needed.
He prefers to
describe the album as 'slept on'. As to whether the
group still records, PM
says, "well it's hard to answer this question because
Kgee is in the US
whiles I am in the UK which obviously makes it quite
difficult to
collaborate, however we are looking to come together in
the nearest possible
time to record some of the songs we have written and
possibly do a remix of
'Saa Na Wotie'."
PM began radio on Radio Continental, a campus-based
station when he was
studying his first degree in Ghana. He was introduced to
Rainbow Radio in
May 2005 and now his show is aired twice a week between
6 and 9pm on
Saturdays and between 3 and 6pm Sundays, with a very
unique, somewhat sexy
voice. The shows boast of a good mix of old and new
Ghanaian
hiplife/highlife tunes, naija pop and general afro beats
spiced with some
witty quotes and jokes he calls 'nonsense' (call it
taking the piss!!).He
believes that life is not permanent hence "do not take
it too serious"! His
radio shows appeal to almost every age group but mostly
appeals to the
ladies; not surprisingly! Guests on his show have
included Reggie Rockstone,
Tic Tac, Praye and Kwabena Kwabena. The PM has DJ'd on
numerous occasions at
one of the finest Ghanaian clubs in London called The
Gold Coast Bar/Club
(www.thegoldcoastbar.com) and other clubs like Funky
Budha, Asanka Bar and
Manjaro. He also plays for loads of parties monthly, be
it a house party,
club party, or wedding reception. Outside radio, he does
not only play
African music but "anything urban"; hip-hop, R&B,
bashment, funky house, old
school club classics, garage and pop music.
The PM in his free time (which is quite limited) is on
Facebook updating his
status, something he is well famous for because of his
extremely
interesting, witty statements. He watches at most one
movie every now and
again (either a documentary, a biography, a comedy or a
thriller) or listens
to some good tunes (mainly hip-hop)- that is aside
making people laugh! Like
he always says: "half of being smart, is knowing what
you are dumb at!"
(Catch The PM on the pm on weekends between 6 and 9pm
(Saturdays) and
between 3 and 6pm (Sundays) on www.rainbowradio.co.uk,
DAB Radio across
London, Galaxy 25 in Canada and the USA, Eurobird/Astra
TV in Europe or
otherwise on Sky TV 0207).
